Our final Staff Success Story for 2024 features Lin Ferguson, the Business Support Manager at HCL.
Lin has been with HCL for an incredible 23 years, during which she has progressed successfully through the HCL career path. Over her tenure, Lin has held three positions: Cook Manager, Administrator, and Business Support Manager. Everyone who knows Lin and has worked with her over the years will agree that she has an exceptional work ethic and leads by example.
Lin joined HCL in 2001 as a Cook Manager at Watchlytes School in Welwyn Garden City. In 2003, she moved to a larger school, Applecroft School, which served 250 meals a day. In her current role as Business Support Manager, Lin’s hands-on experience as a former Cook Manager provides her with invaluable insight and support for our kitchen teams, who frequently turn to her and her team for guidance.
“I absolutely loved my time as a Cook Manager. I did this role for five years, but I always wanted to progress and the opportunity arose for an Administrator position at Head Office. With my background in administration, I jumped at the chance. After about a year, the Business Support Manager retired and I was seconded into the role for three months. I then applied for the position and was successful,”.

When we asked Lin what she enjoys most about working at HCL, she said:
“HCL is a great company to work for, along with the people within the organisation. I have really felt supported in my career progression. My team are amazing, demonstrating company pride, commitment, a great work ethic and above all, excellent communication.”
HCL actively supports employees wishing to develop their skills further. Our Training and Development Team offers a variety of workshops and courses for staff. Additionally, further development opportunities are available to assist employees in advancing their careers at HCL. For Lin, this included completing her NVQ Diploma in Business and Administration, which she achieved between 2011 and 2012
In November 2021, Lin received the Judges’ Award for Special Commendation:
“Her work ethic is exemplary, with her unfaltering support and incalculable assistance to everyone in the company. Lin is the ‘go-to’ person for all colleagues and provides a central nucleus that knits each team together – always smiling, always willing to help and always going above and beyond in her wide-ranging daily duties.”
